What does backup mean for you?
1. Full fic backup (recommended if you want the stories)
Run a downloader on your computer. Point it at your bookmarks URL (or a link file). Log in only inside that tool — never on a random website.
ao3downloader Recommended
Windows · Mac · Linux
Best starting point for “download all my bookmarked works.” Can also export links only.
- Open the GitHub project or Releases.
- Install per the README for your OS.
- When AO3 is up, log in only inside the tool.
- Paste your bookmarks URL. Go slow on large libraries.

Other full-download options (FanFicFare, froyo)
Not affiliated with these projects. Download only from the GitHub links above.

2. Link / CSV backup (checklist, not full text)
Save what you bookmarked so you can find it again or hand the URLs to FanFicFare later. This is not a full fic archive.
- Use our free public bookmarks → CSV / link export (username only).
- Private bookmarks need a local userscript while logged into AO3, or a desktop tool that supports login — see that export page.
- Keep the file somewhere safe (drive, USB). Update it occasionally while AO3 is healthy.
Authors — back up your own posted works
Different job from downloading other people’s bookmarks.
ao3backup
Desktop / scraper
Scrapes your public works into Markdown. Not for mass-downloading someone else’s library.

Or use AO3’s own Download button on each of your works when the site is up.
When AO3 is down
You can’t finish a live backup until the archive is reachable. Bookmark the tool list, fix reused passwords, and wait for official OTW updates.
